2013 South Carolina Trumpet Festival

On March 23, 2013 the South Carolina Trumpet Guild celebrated the third annual South Carolina Trumpet Festival.

The festival was hosted by Dave Allison, Director of Bands at Spring Valley High School in Columbia, SC. The festival began with a convocation featuring Kim Dunnick, ITG president, which was followed by special interest sessions including “Herbert L. Clarke’s and Claude Gordon’s Teachings” by Jeff Purtle from Anderson University; “Solo Trumpet Music for Worship” by Barry Wilson, SCTG President; “Trumpet Manufacturing” by Fred Powell of Powell Trumpets; a question and answer session by Allen Vizzutti; “Visualization and Practice Strategies” by Matthew White from Coastal Carolina University, and a master class by Kim Dunnick, ITG President.

The festival concluded with a program of music and presentations which began with Concert Fanfare for Six Trumpets by Eric Ewazen played by the trumpet ensemble from Coastal Carolina University under the direction of Matthew White. Following the fanfare SCTG President Barry Wilson presented a Lifetime Achievement award to Mitch Santiago, long-time South Carolina trumpeter and band director whose influence was reflected in the large number of friends and former students who turned out for the presentation ceremony. The highlight of the festival and the concluding program was a recital by Allen and Laura Vizzutti. In addition to being an international concert and recording artist, Vizzutti serves as Visiting Professor of Trumpet and Artist in Residence at the University of South Carolina where James Ackley is Professor of Trumpet. The Vizzuttis’ program included Hertel’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat, Quatre Variations sur un theme de Dominico Scarlatti by Bitsch, Andante and Capriccio by Allen Vizzutti, Over the Rainbow arranged by Vizzutti, and Jazz Sonata for Trumpet and Piano by Vizzutti.

The festival was made possible by a grant from the International Trumpet Guild and sponsored by Yamaha Corporation, Andreas Eastman, Powell Trumpets, Facet Mutes, Pecknel Music, Music & Arts, and Musical Innovations.
